چکیده

Objective of this study was to determine the mineral and heavy metal contents anchovy caught from 3 different regions, namely Black Sea (Sinop-Samsun coast), Marmara (İstanbul coast) Aegean (İzmir coast). Mineral material contamination levels in were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Population – genetic structure on European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, Linnaeus, 1758) (Osteichthyes: Engraulide) from Mediterranean Basin and Atlantic Ocean

Muscle proteins of the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus L. were analyzed using starch gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing on thin polyacrylamide ampholine gel. Twenty-two protein loci were analyzed and polymorphism was found in six of them. Based on genetic-biochemical data, we hypothesize that there are two anchovy subspecies, European and African. The former inhabits the Atlan...

Morphologic and Allozyme Analyses of European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus (L. 1758)) in the Black, Marmara and Aegean Seas

The morphologic and genetic variations of Engraulis encrasicolus (L. 1758) were studied based on morphometric, meristic and allozyme analyses. Samples were collected throughout the Black, Marmara and Aegean Seas. Discriminant function analysis of both morphometric and meristic characters indicated the existence of four morphologically differentiated groups of E. encrasicolus. The Aegean Sea and...

Structure and spectral sensitivity of photoreceptors of two anchovy species: Engraulis japonicus and Engraulis encrasicolus

The morphology, fine structure and spectral sensitivity of retinal photoreceptors of two anchovy species were investigated using light and electron microscopy and microspectrophotometry. Distinct regional specialisation of cones was observed. Long and short (bilobed) cones were observed in the horizontal retinal belt, including the nasal and temporal retinal zones. Only triple cones with two lo...

A COI Nonsynonymous Mutation as Diagnostic Tool for Intraspecific Discrimination in the European Anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus)

The European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, is currently one of the principal target species for commercial fisheries in Europe. In this study, the mitochondrial Control Region (CR) and the Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) mitochondrial gene were analyzed in 74 specimens of E. encrasicolus from four localities in the central Mediterranean. In both populations, the two markers revealed the presence ...

Seasonal changes in proximate composition of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, L.) from the central Adriatic

Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, L.) is the only European representative of the Engraulidae family and it is an endemic species of the Mediterranean-Atlantic region. It belongs to the group of small pelagic fish, caught along the Mediterranean shores and widely spread in the Adriatic Sea. The migration of anchovies from coastal regions towards open sea waters is related to their age and size, t...
